Repower or replace

When a repower makes sense.

  • The hull is sound and you like the boat. A Whaler like this one is a good example: the hull and the layout are worth keeping, so the engine is what changes.
  • The old engine has stopped earning its keep. Hard starts, repeat repairs, or parts that are getting hard to find.
  • You want to trust her again. A repower is the point where the controls, the gauges and the wiring get looked at too, not just the motor.

The whole job

More than hanging an engine.

An outboard repower touches the whole boat. The new motor needs controls and steering that suit it, gauges that read it, and wiring, fuel lines and rigging run right from the console to the transom. On the Whaler, the console came apart down to the panel and the rigging was run through the deck, as the pictures show.

The same shop handles the rest of it: outboard service for all makes and models, boat trailer repair, marine electronics, and winterization when the season ends.

Shop notes

Repowers, quick answers.

Do you repower boats?
Yes. The latest is a 17 ft Boston Whaler Montauk: a complete repower and a full overhaul of the entire boat, done by Patriot Marine in Ridgely, Maryland.
What engine went on the Whaler?
A Yamaha outboard. The shop works on outboards of all makes and models, so tell us what you have now and what you want.
Is my boat worth repowering?
If the hull and the transom are sound, a repower keeps the boat you already know and gives her a new engine. Send the work order with the boat and the engine, and the shop calls you back to talk it through.
Is a repower just a new engine?
No. The controls, steering, gauges, wiring and rigging all have to suit the new motor. On the Whaler the console came apart and the rigging was run through the deck, as the pictures show.
Can you do the trailer at the same time?
Yes. Trailer service and repair: bearings, brakes, lighting and wiring.
